Important Facts about Widows
Today, there are 8.5 million widows and more than 700,000 new widows are added every year. Women will live 14 years longer than their spouses on average. For this reason, there are almost four times as many widows as widowers. While half of all women will be widowed by 65, the average age of a widow today is just 56 years old. The median annual income of a widow 65+ years is just $9,281. Nine out of 10 women will become solely responsible for managing their own finances. One in 4 women will be broke within two months of her husband passes away. And nearly 75% of widows now living in poverty were not poor when their husbands were alive.
